The Wiedersum organization has been involved with several interesting private projects in recent years. Unlike many of our normal educational and hospital projects, these usually involve a lengthy development period and are dependent on several factors that have a tendency of becoming very complicated.

Vintage Square: This project involves a new parking garage structure located in downtown Riverhead, adjacent to the Suffolk County Supreme Court facility. Ten new courtrooms were recently added to the complex, which necessitated additional parking.

The original program called for a multi-level parking garage to accommodate the parking needs of the courts, railroad travelers, visitors, and the Riverhead community at large. Conceptually, the plans provide parking for approximately 800 cars, a centrally-located open plaza lined with restaurants, small businesses, and specialty shops, along with a variety of rental office space lining the lower level’s exterior walls. The project’s newest attraction is a multiplex theater.

Vintage Square encompasses several acres of land between the Courthouse and the Long Island Rail Road station. Ideally, the courts would utilize the parking primarily from 9:00 in the morning to the early afternoon. Train travelers would follow the same schedule, and moviegoers would mostly likely arrive in the early afternoon and into the evening. On weekends, visitors to the Riverhead Aquarium and other East End attractions could take advantage of the parking and shuttle service that would be available.

Another benefit of the parking garage would be to accommodate day visitors who take the Orient ferry to Connecticut casinos. Parking at Orient Point is very limited and Vintage Square will provide shuttle service to and from the ferry on a pre-determined schedule.

Wiedersum Associates has developed several designs for indoor athletic facilities that would house multi-striped turf fields for soccer/lacrosse/ football, etc. These massive buildings would be enclosed with a membrane structural system that allows for a wide range of sporting activities to be carried out on a 24/7 basis. Weather would not be a factor, as the structures would be both heated and air-conditioned for year- round usage. There would be no limitation of usage or wear on the field since it’s an artificial grass turf/rubber composite surface. Several designs provided observation areas, locker rooms, meeting rooms, and café/beverage areas, as well as spectator viewing.
