Wiedersum Associates has been involved in a broad range of unique design projects involving various county, town, state, and federal agencies, as well as privately-funded programs. The scope of these projects takes in the design of medical buildings, religious facilities, financial institutions, computer centers, correctional facilities, and recreation complexes.
The firm has worked on a variety of projects for both Nassau and Suffolk Counties, from interior office renovation to specialized facilities such as the Cradle of Aviation Museum and Theater; Cantiague Park Ice Skating & Sports Complex; the 290,000-square-foot Metropolitan Suburban Bus Authority Complex for the County of Nassau; North Hempstead’s Indoor Swimming Pool and Recreation Complex; Indian Island Maintenance Facility; and Suffolk County’s Sixth District Court Expansion. Presently, design work is being completed for Suffolk’s new replacement correctional facility in Yaphank. The $152- million dollar, more than 300,000-square-foot expansion program will enter the final construction phase by the fall of 2008.
On the federal government level, Wiedersum was selected by the US Department of Health, Education and Welfare to design the Helen Keller National Center for Deaf and Blind Youths and Adults. The concept behind this 25-acre campus was to create an environment where these young people could learn how to care for themselves on a daily basis. This facility paved the way for many future design and construction components set forth in ADA (Americans with Disability Act) which governs modern-day building designs. The wooded campus contained three separate and unique buildings for residential living, training, and educational & learning. It also featured a dog training unit with a walking track for individuals to become accustomed to leading a normal life upon leaving the Center.
The Wiedersum organization has worked with the New York State Dormitory Authority and the State Construction Fund on several educational oriented projects. Currently, we’re finalizing the design of a highly-technical Computer Data Center for Brookhaven National Laboratory under the jurisdiction of the US Department of Energy. Other recently-completed projects include the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame, and the Suffolk County Police Athletic League.
