Since the firm’s inception some 82 years ago, the Wiedersum organization has been a leader in the design of educational facilities throughout the Metropolitan New York area. In 1929, company founder Frederic P. Wiedersum completed his first major educational project: the Valley Stream Central High School in Nassau County, New York. In 1934 came the Wellington C. Mepham High School in Bellmore. This building was the first contemporary high school on the continent, and set the tone for future secondary school designs throughout North America and Europe. Today, these two facilities still carry their unique design characteristics of being educationally functional while providing a strong appearance. For many years the Wiedersum name was related directly to school design, and the firm was often referred to as the “School Architects”. Today, approximately 80-85% of Wiedersum Associates’ workload is dedicated to the design of public educational projects, under the guidelines of the NYS Educational Department’s Facilities Planning Office.
Since 1926, the Wiedersum organization has been responsible for the design of over 1525 “major” educational projects of diversified scope and magnitude throughout New York and New Jersey. Many involved new high schools, junior highs, and middle schools, as well as a wide range of elementary facilities. Over the years, many of these buildings received sizable additions to accommodate increases in student enrollment, in addition to programmatic enhancements or changes.
Wiedersum Associates is very proud of the contributions that have been made over the years to the many public school districts they have served throughout New York and New Jersey. We have worked closely with many Boards of Education in developing successful referendum programs that provided their communities with building programs capable of meeting the educational needs of students while considering the cost implications on the community.
Since the early 1980’s, the firm has developed and maintained a strong client base in the Nassau and Suffolk County area. In recent years, Wiedersum Associates Architects has also been developing new clients in communities throughout Westchester, Rockland, Dutchess, Putnam, and Orange counties.
