In 1972, Wiedersum’s first major healthcare project involved the original St. Francis “Heart Center” Hospital in Roslyn, New York. This new 210-bed facility utilized a design/build fast-track process, which dramatically streamlined the start-to-completion timeframe while maintaining the client’s limited budget. The facility incorporated many unique features that provided the hospital with unusual flexibility in the building's interior layout and operational usage.
Since the St. Francis project, the firm has worked with several major hospitals on a diverse range of programs involving multi-story additions, operating suites, patient rooms, emergency room upgrades, laboratories, MRI and CAT Scan expansions, maternity, breast health care, pediatrics, and pharmacies, in addition to numerous other essential hospital services and functions. These facilities include Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center, Winthrop University Hospital, St. Charles Hospital and Rehabilitation Center, New Island Hospital, St. Catherine of Sienna Medical Center, and Mercy Medical Center, as well as several nursing homes and assisted-living facilities.
For almost 40 years, the Wiedersum organization has provided their design expertise to the healthcare community by working hand-in-hand with administrators to provide the best medical service possible to their patients. With all healthcare institutions, there is a continual need to upgrade and/or provide additional spaces within their existing infrastructure to meet changes in technology, improve medical services, and adapt to the needs of their patients and the communities they serve. Because interior renovations and alterations require on-going design considerations, Wiedersum Associates developed an in-house architectural team to address our clients’ needs.
Many healthcare providers have developed off-site facilities to provide essential community services without re-designing their established infrastructure. Wiedersum Associates has designed new independent structures to handle specialized services with highly technical equipment and/or procedures. Additionally, we have renovated existing off-campus spaces for other essential services and healthcare uses such as imaging centers, womens’ health centers, physical therapy, etc.
